NEWS AND STUFF

Help, I can't move!

I read something funny 'Aerobics is a series of strenuous exercises which help convert fats, sugars, and starch into aches, pains and cramps.'

We have all done it - gone mad after a few weeks of or tried something new and the result is legs that refuse to work and arms that can not lift the kettle! This is delayed onset muscle soreness  or DOMS for those who like abbreviations.

It is quote common and the NHS has a whole page on it just  click here.

They say that 'muscle soreness that shows up a day or two after exercising can affect anyone, regardless of your fitness level. It is, in simple terms, due to the smallest muscle fibres tearing (when being stretched) and repairing themselves. This should not put you off as this quite is normal, doesn't last long and is a sign of your improving fitness. They do say that a combination of protein and carbohydrates can help your muscles restore and regain strength so don't feel guilty if you reward yourself wth a post class treat - just make sure it is of the muscle (and not fat) building variety!

Some people are put off trying a new from of exercise as they think it might hurt and they often mistake DOMS for poor teaching or an exercise/piece of gym equipment that is too hard or inappropriate. Of course, you can work too hard and attend a class that does not meet your specific needs - that is why it is important that your class that meets you needs -socially, physically and financially.

The first week back to class is ALWAYS gentle with old favourites and a few new things as the aim is get the synovial fluid between the joints moving, awaken the muscles and get the grey cells working.

Looking forward to seeing you all next week when we shall ease ourselves and our muscles into exercising for fun!
