28/12/2019 Getting active for Mind.Being a couch potato and binge watching a whole TV series is OK for a day or so but It is important to keep active. I always feel better after a class or a brisk walk so I have signed up for @REDJanuaryUK and will be getting active every day to raise funds for Mind. I'm not running a marathon (I don't run!) but I will be going for a walk, dancing in front of the TV or 'doing something' every day 'with purpose' for Mind. I hope you will support me and click onto my fundraising page https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/red-january-2020-3add73cf-7ac5-40a4-8b61-d37027189635 as you will see I haven't set too high a target! Thank you. 21/12/2019 Mobility aid friendly class! This morning I received a certificate through the post, my Para Dance qualification.
The course took several months from start to finish with a detailed online section and a 3 day practical with almost continual assessment throughout! My motivation for taking this course was my class participants. Mobility issues come in many guises and not everyone needs a wheelchair as conditions like arthritis or knee and hip replacements can make movement more difficult. With class participants in their mid to late 80's and 90's I have to make sure my class meets their needs and so I have to be able to reassure them that it is suitable for those with mobility issues - which means being able to deliver a mobility aid friendly class. There will still be the usual warm up (as that is essential for fall awareness) and standing work ( for balance and leg strengthening) but there will be subtle adaptions for those who need them so no one need miss out on a fun, exercise to music class. So, if you are finding that you need to use your walking stick more than before, but want an exercise class, then bring it along on Monday afternoons and see if Monday EXTEND class 'ticks your box'. . 15/12/2019 Thank you.Tonight is the 'Big Thank You' during the BBC Sport Personality of the Year.
Volunteers - where would be be without them? Tonight during the Sports Personality of the Year we will be thanking people who have volunteered and made a difference. But, these are everyday people, not sports stars. What might happen if the grass at your local sports club was not cut before every game, the bar was not be open for a quick drink, and no one replaced the toilet paper when it runs out? The children will have no one to coach them, there will be no one to administer first aid and the kit may go unwashed, litter left and chairs never put back in the right place. In the dance world ballet buns might not be as great as they could be without the mum who can tame newly washed hair, no one to collect the money for Christmas parties or make the sandwiches for special events. No one to book the halls, sell raffle tickets or make sure the hall is as clean and tidy (if not cleaner) than you found it. There would be no one to pass on skills, develop training courses or run training days or residential courses. Who puts out the books, and tidies them away, buys the snacks and puts up the Christmas decorations for the fair? There would be no Trustees taking on the responsibility of governance, fundraising or the day- to - day running of charity/company. So, what ever you do, where ever you go, please remember to say a thank you to the person who 'does the stuff' so you can do what you do. BUT most importantly a very BIG THANK YOU to everyone who comes to my EXTEND or Medau classes, as well as the volunteers at Jewish Care and The Methodist Church in Grange Park, without you, your laughter, smiles and friendship they would not be as much fun as they are! 12/12/2019 Dates for the diaryMonday EXTEND at the Southgate Methodist Church
